Overview

Our current transportation system is economically, environmentally, and socially unsustainable.

Shifting away from our reliance on single occupancy vehicles will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air and water quality, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, alleviate traffic congestion, and improve public health and equity.  In doing so, we can also improve our overall quality of life.

While the existing situation is challenging, Baltimore has a strong foundation to build upon as we invest in a more sustainable transportation system for the future. Baltimore’s core was designed before the prevalence of automobiles and, at other points in history, relied on transit and walking as the principle means to move people around the city. Many trips Baltimore citizens make are short enough for walking or biking.  Capitalizing on Baltimore’s existing network, targeting improvements, and redeveloping in a transit-orientated fashion will allow Baltimore to meet the transportation needs of residents in a sustainable way.
