Registration for the Plastic Bag Reduction Program

Registration for the Plastic Bag Reduction Program
August 27, 2010

The registration website for the Plastic Bag Reduction Program is not yet posted online.  Therefore, there will be no late registration penalty to food store owners at this time. The registration website will be available mid - September 2010.

The Plastic Bag Reduction Program is Baltimore’s answer to the growing impact that the waste from single-use plastic bags has on our local and global environment. This new program will require food store owners to encourage customers to use reusable bags rather than plastic bags. Food stores will no longer provide plastic bags to customers unless that customer specifically asks for one. There will be reusable bags available for purchase in all food stores as well as a recycling bin for customers to return their old plastic bags to the store.

Beginning in mid - September 2010 food store owners will register their stores online and record their bag use during a six month period.

Web links will appear on the Baltimore Office of Sustainability website at
www.baltimoresustainability.org that will help guide you through the registration and reporting process. These links will be available in early September.

We will be updating information constantly through the Baltimore Office of Sustainability website as well as print newsletters from local business associations. If you have specific questions please visit the Baltimore Office of Sustainability website and click the link “ask questions.” You may also email your questions to sustainability@baltimorecity.gov attention: Beth Strommen.
