Maintenance of Public Land
Along with enjoying the benefit of publicly available land, the Baltimore community has a responsibility to properly maintain this space.
Land that is well maintained and cared for raises the value of surrounding properties. Where this land is managed with community support, there is the added benefit of social interaction and additional community stabilization. Creative, cost-effective methods of land management are needed to meet this challenge, including both government and citizen organizational capacity building, education, and training. Here are three strategies to help:
- Establish city-wide maintenance standards for publicly owned land
- Build capacity of existing city maintenance staff through training and education
- Expand adoption and community stewardship of public land

What You Can Do:
- 1Organize a Community Pitch In (PDF)
- 2Work with your neighbors to manage a community open space
- 3Use the City’s bulk trash pick up service. Baltimore is one of the few cities offering its residents curbside collection of bulk trash items. In fact, we’ll pick up 3 items from your home every month! We’ll even take tires (without the rims please). All you need to do is call 311 to schedule pick up.
